Foreign material testing is an important part of evaluating soybean quality. With the proper sieve, sample pans, and grain grading scale, operators can separate foreign material from a soybean sample and calculate its percentage of the total sample. In this video, Sean from Seedburo Equipment Company demonstrates the complete testing process using the 9000AG Computer Grain Grading Scale. Equipment Needed Before beginning the test, gather the following equipment: 9000AG Computer Grain Grading Scale 8/64 Round Commercial Sieve Bottom Catch Pan Two Triangular Sample Pans A representative soybean sample, typically around 250 grams Step 1: Prepare the Sieve and Scale Place the 8/64 round commercial sieve inside the bottom catch pan. Next, place one triangular sample pan on the 9000AG scale. Because the pan has its own weight, press the Zero button to tare the scale before adding the soybean sample. Step 2: Weigh and Store the Soybean Sample Pour the soybean sample into the triangular pan and allow the scale reading to stabilize. Press the Memory button to store the original sample weight. The 9000AG will use this stored weight to calculate the percentage of foreign material after the sample has been sieved. Remove the soybean sample from the scale and transfer it to the 8/64 round sieve. Return the same tared triangular pan to the scale. Step 3: Sieve the Sample Shake the sieve using 30 back-and-forth strokes. This motion separates foreign material from the soybeans, allowing the smaller material to pass through the sieve and collect in the bottom catch pan. For consistent results, use a controlled and repeatable motion throughout the test. Step 4: Weigh the Foreign Material After completing the 30 strokes, collect the foreign material from the bottom catch pan and place it into the triangular pan on the scale. The 9000AG will first display the weight in grams. Switch the scale to percentage mode to view the foreign material as a percentage of the original soybean sample.
